Does a soundboard work in-game?

Short answer: yes, in Valorant, CS2, Fortnite and everything else — but only if two things are true. Most “my soundboard stopped working in-game” posts come down to one of them, and neither has anything to do with anti-cheat.

The two things that decide it

  1. Does the app still hear your keys when the game has focus? A soundboard that listens through a window-level shortcut goes deaf the second a fullscreen game takes over. One that listens at device level does not.
  2. Can anyone else hear the result? Playing a sound on your speakers is not the same as sending it into voice chat. That is a routing problem, and it is separate from the trigger problem.

Get both right and a soundboard is completely reliable in-game. Get either wrong and it looks broken in a way that is easy to blame on the game.

No, anti-cheat is not blocking your soundboard

This is the most common wrong answer on the internet. Vanguard (Valorant), VAC (CS2) and Easy Anti-Cheat (Fortnite) care about processes that read or write game memory, inject code, or feed synthetic input into the game. A soundboard does none of that: it reads your keyboard and plays audio.

There is one real caveat, and it is worth understanding because it decides which tools are safe to run. Software that synthesises keystrokes — macro tools, auto-clickers, remappers that inject fake input into the game — is exactly what kernel-level anti-cheat looks for. That is a different category of tool from a soundboard, which only listens. Reading input is not the same as faking it.

Rule of thumb: if a tool would still work with the game closed and never sends anything into the game, anti-cheat has no reason to care. Playing a sound file and switching an OBS scene both pass that test easily.

Why hotkey soundboards die in fullscreen

Most free soundboards bind sounds to a shortcut like Ctrl+F5. Two things then go wrong at once:

The setup that actually holds up

The version that never fights the game is a second keyboard. A cheap USB board sits next to your main one; the soundboard listens only to that device, so every key on it is free. Your W, your Shift and your ability keys stay exactly what the game thinks they are, because the game never sees the second board's presses at all.

  1. Plug in any spare USB keyboard — a €10 office board is fine.
  2. Select it in SoundLord as the soundboard device. Keys from it fire sounds and get swallowed; your main keyboard is untouched.
  3. Set the game to borderless windowed if you had audio drop-outs before.
  4. Route the audio into voice chat — see below.

No second keyboard? It still works on your main one, you just have to pick keys the game does not use. The full walkthrough is in Turn a spare USB keyboard into a soundboard & stream deck.

Making your team actually hear it

Your headphones playing a sound proves nothing — your squad hears your microphone, and your microphone does not hear your desktop audio. The fix is a free virtual audio cable: the soundboard plays into it, and voice chat listens to it as if it were a mic. It takes about five minutes once: How to play soundboard sounds through your mic.

The trap nobody warns you about: Discord's noise suppression (Krisp) is trained to remove everything that is not a human voice — which is a perfect description of your airhorn. If teammates hear you but not your sounds, turn Krisp off in Voice & Video before you debug anything else.

Per-game notes

GameWhat to watch for
ValorantVanguard runs at boot and is the strictest of the three, but it targets input injection and memory access — not audio playback. Borderless windowed avoids the fullscreen audio-priority issue.
CS2Almost the whole keyboard is bound by default, so a second keyboard pays off fastest here. VAC does not touch audio software.
FortniteBuilder keybinds occupy most of the comfortable keys. Same answer: a dedicated board, or pick keys well outside the build set.
Any gameIf sounds fire but arrive late, you are fighting an idle audio pipeline, not the game. SoundLord keeps the pipeline warm so the first sound after a quiet stretch is not the slow one.
