Discord's built-in soundboard
Free. Already installed. Genuinely fine for a lot of people.
If your entire use case is “I want to play a few memes in my friends' server,” stop reading and use this. Nothing to install, nothing to route, it just works and everyone hears it.
Where it runs out: sounds live on the server, not with you, so they do not follow you anywhere else. Clips are short and the slot count is tied to the server's boost level. It only works in Discord — not in game voice chat, not in OBS, not in a call. And you are picking from a grid with the mouse, which is a different thing from hitting a key.
EXP Soundboard
Free, open source, no account, no telemetry.
A small Java app that does exactly one thing: bind audio files to hotkeys and play them to two outputs at once (your headphones and a virtual cable). It has been around for years and it does not try to sell you anything.
Where it runs out: the interface is dated, development is quiet, it needs Java, and it is hotkey-based — so you inherit every key-conflict problem that causes in games. No effects, no editing, no OBS.
Resanance
Free, modern, actively developed.
Probably the best genuinely-free option in 2026 if you have outgrown EXP. Clean interface, built-in handling for virtual cable routing, MIDI and Stream Deck support, and a reasonable hotkey system. For most people who just want a free soundboard that does not look like it was made in 2011, this is the answer.
Where it runs out: still fundamentally a clip player — no per-sound editing, no mixing, no instruments. Hotkey-based, with the usual conflicts.
Voicemod
Free tier with rotating voices; paid unlocks the rest.
Voicemod's real product is the voice changer, and it is very good at it. The soundboard is a companion feature. If what you actually want is to sound like a robot or a chipmunk in voice chat, this is the obvious pick and nothing else on this list competes.
Where it runs out: the free tier rotates which voices you can use, which is frustrating by design. It installs its own audio driver and is a known suspect when a machine develops audio weirdness. As a pure soundboard it is more overhead than the job needs.
Soundpad
Paid (~€5 on Steam), not free — but it belongs on this list.
The long-standing answer for “I want a reliable clip player and I do not want to think about it.” Sold through Steam, cheap, stable, good hotkey handling and useful volume normalisation. If a plain, dependable soundboard is all you need, it is hard to argue against.
Where it runs out: Steam-bound, Windows-only, and it is a player rather than a creator — no mixing, no instruments, no OBS control. Hotkey-based.
SoundLord

The pitch is different from the rest: instead of binding a handful of hotkeys, you assign a whole keyboard. Plug in a spare USB board, tell the app to listen only to that device, and all 60+ keys become triggers while your main keyboard stays completely normal — no key conflicts in games, ever. Keys can also run actions instead of sounds (OBS scenes, app launchers, media keys, panic stop), which is where it starts replacing a stream deck. On top of that sit a ten-lane mixer for building your own clips, 25 sampled instruments and a per-key effect chain.
Where it runs out: it is not free after the beta. It is Windows-only. Routing into Discord still needs the same free virtual cable everything else needs. And if all you want is to play six memes, it is more app than you need — use Resanance.
